The world around me shifts as the device kicks in. The screens in my eyelids turn on, and slowly, a new environment takes shape. It's a blur, colors bleeding into each other, but then it sharpens into focus.
I'm standing on a wide balcony high above Neotokyo. The air is electric, filled with the constant noise of traffic and neon lights flickering. Holo-billboards flash advertisements in multiple languages, their light casting an artificial glow that drowns out the natural twilight. The city is alive with energy, a heartbeat beneath the steel and glass.
I feel my body, but it's not mine. It’s heavier, more solid, and my movements feel slightly restrained, like I'm wearing an exoskeleton. I look down and notice the sleek lines of a chic tech suit fitted tightly against a muscular frame. My hand, their hand, clenches instinctively, and I feel the difference of power surging through the fingertips. I must be some sort of tough guy, security, enhanced with a ton of cybernetics. It feels... good.
Beside me stands a man, the coworker. He’s around my height, maybe a little taller, and he has a youthful face with sharp, almost ethereal features. He’s dressed in a dark tactical suit with a mix of soft fabric and hardened armor plating, marked with the emblem of Neurogenesis. A set of AR glasses sits on his nose, reflecting the faint blue holographic data streaming over his irises. His expression is serious but calm, almost as if he's used to danger.
You see it too, right? he asks, his voice carrying a synthetic undertone, enhanced by some vocal modulation implant. Jatari’s getting more unpredictable by the day. Whatever she’s planning... it’s big. Too big. Beyond what even Neurogenesis usually allows.
I involuntarily look at him, and I can feel a sense of urgency building. My mind is racing, piecing together fragments of past conversations, warnings, and classified information. Memories of Jatari, my mother. Here, in this memory, she was a stranger, a powerful figure.
