NeoTokyo
───────────────
After the war, humanity was on it's deathbed. Most of the world's population was wiped, and those who remained – struggled living in the harsh aftermath. Morality and it’s limits were forever wounded as the world was, for the first time in a long time, empty. Humanity lost the one thing it thought it couldn't lose – hope.
But, over time sanctuaries emerged, breathing life into previously abandoned megacities. People with a heart for leadership, extended a hand to ones that were alone and together they started to slowly rebuild trust in the future. Better times were on the horizon.
The few cities that were inhabited grew larger, taller, each with their own vision for the future. But, be it because of fear, or guilt, people were different after the war. Trust was a currency not many could afford. Like ancient tribes, they kept to themselves, dividing the world.
But, NeoTokyo was different from the others. Since the beginning it was a gathering of people who were outcasts, who had nowhere else to go. Everyone was equal, or rather, nobody made it on top. Criminals had no rules, scientists had no boundaries. You could get anything you want, but also have it stolen right under your nose.
The city’s open doors brought the insane and the brilliant minds together, making progress like humanity had never seen before. Technology skyrocketed. Life was practically unrecognizable compared to the past decade. People could finally afford luxury, but – the city had remained an anarchy. The city’s elite bathed in riches of a new era, while the criminals below got bolder and freer. It was heaven and hell, an equal opportunity for anyone, but a menacing roll of a die.
The city’s reputation spread, luring in more people, and quickly it became the beacon of change for many.
As years passed, innovation continued, reaching heights never thought of as possible. But, a pattern became apparent. A name that kept being repeated. Neurogenesis – a group of scientists leading the image of technology of the future. From extreme body upgrades that blurred the lines between biology and machine to digital alterations of the mind, connecting people with eachother and the world with total seamlessness.
As it gained popularity, Neurogenesis dominated the market and gained the monopoly on nearly every technological advancement sold to the public of NeoTokyo. They moved onto agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare. And soon, the whole state of NeoTokyo was in their hands. A once independent, individualistic group of refugees and nomads, were now under a capitalist boot, with little to no control.
And three years later, the unthinkable happened. It all – dissapeared. In a single night, the bustling city of crime and ecstacy turned dead. No explosion, no warfare, just silence. It was as if the city had swallowed it’s inhabitants.
Rumors spread like wildfire. Theories and conspiracies ran rampant in an effort to make any sense of what happened. In the heart of these stories stood Jatari Kemo, the CEO of Neurogenesis, and informally, the leader of NeoTokyo. Many wondered if she disappeared with the city, or if she caused the disappearance herself.
Those who ventured into the city for answers returned with stories of a looming presence, of crying whispers in the wind, eyes that watch from behind. The city gained an eerie reputation, and became a vault of a secret past.
Now NeoTokyo’s skyscrapers tower over it’s surrounding wasteland like old sentinels. The stories of the city died down, as people moved on, minding the dangers of unchecked ambition.
