THE BURDEN OF SCIENCE
As we continued deeper, the air grew colder, the silence more oppressive. We passed more rooms, each one a testament to the horrors that had taken place within these walls.
Finally, we approached a large, open chamber. The sight that greeted us was both awe-inspiring and terrifying. The room was filled with rows upon rows of pods, each one containing a human figure suspended in a state of unconsciousness. The soft hum of machinery filled the air, the only sound in the otherwise silent chamber.
What is this place? I asked out loud.
Maude shook her head, her eyes wide with shock. I think... I think this is where they kept them. This is where they created their new breed of humanity.
We moved closer to one of the pods, peering through the glass. The figure inside was human, but there was something unsettling about them. Their skin was pale, almost translucent, and their features were unnaturally perfect. They looked like they were sleeping, but there was an eerie stillness to them.
These people... they were transformed, Maude said, her voice filled with dread. They were made into something that’s not even human anymore.
As we stood there, absorbing the magnitude of what we had discovered, a loud clanging noise echoed through the chamber.
We turned to see a massive, mechanical spider-like creature emerging from the shadows, its eyes glowing with a menacing light.
Run! I shouted, grabbing Maude's arm and pulling her away from the approaching monstrosity. We sprinted down the corridor, the sound of the creature's metallic legs clanging against the floor growing louder with each passing second.
We burst through another door, slamming it shut behind us. The creature pounded against the door, but it held firm, for now. We took a moment to catch our breath, the adrenaline still coursing through our veins.
Security, Maude explained, her face pale. They must have set these things up to protect the facility. We need to be more careful.
As we continued our search, we reached a control room. The walls were covered with monitors and control panels, each one displaying various parts of the facility. Maude instinctively began hacking into the system.
There's something here, she said, her eyes fixed on the screen. A central database. If we can access it, we might find out who was behind all of this.
I nodded, fueled by the taste of vengeance in the back of my mind. Do it.
As Maude began breaching the files, a sudden alarm blared through the facility. Red lights flashed, and a voice echoed through the halls:
⚠ Unauthorized access detected. Lockdown activated.
Shit, Maude muttered.
Options? I asked, trying to keep my voice calm.
We've got two, she replied. We can try to escape the lockdown before the security measures fully engage... or we can use the time to dig deeper into the facility’s data, but we run the risk being locked up in this hellhole.
Each choice had its benefits, and none of them guaranteed success.
