THE BURDEN OF SCIENCE
What are you working on? I asked, leaning over to get a better look.
Trying to crack these encrypted files I found back in the club district, she replied without looking up. Someone went to great lengths to hide this information, but if there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s cracking codes.
I watched in awe as she navigated the digital maze with ease. Her hacking skills were impressive, to say the least. So, what’s the plan? I asked.
Maude paused, annoyed, glancing up at me. The plan is for me to see what up with this file, and for you to not interrupt me.
I backed up, physically and mentally. She wasn't kidding when she said she works alone, and I was not going to be the one to test that right now.
Got it. Maude said, a triumphant smile spreading across her face. We’re in.
I leaned closer, peering at the screen. Lines of code scrolled past at an incredible speed. What are we looking at?
This, she said, pulling up a file named 'Neurogenesis_Project-48N', is what we’re looking for.
Neurogenesis. The name brought up distant memories. What about it?
Maude pointed to the document on the screen:
Maude sighed in disappointment as she propped her elbow on the table, resting her forehead against her clenched fist. She stared at the floor, lost in thought. Looks like even Neuroshit had stuff to hide. Incredible how a corporation as shameless as them still had skeletons in their closet, she said, already distracted by the next set of data on the monitor. And according to it's location tracks, it seems to be somewhere beneath the city...
The idea of venturing into the secrets of such a controversial science organization, was both thrilling and terrifying. This city that had swallowed so many lives surely didn't do it just like that. It was time to bring it's truth to the surface. Let's go, I said, with determination in my voice. We need to find out how deep this goes.
Maude nodded. We gathered our gear and set out into the night.
